A Birkenhead man is in hospital after being attacked by a gang apparently armed with a machete.
The shocking incident took place after the victim became involved in "an altercation" with six or seven other men on Houghton Road, Upton, at around 6.30pm last night.
The 25-year-old victim is being treated for cuts to his back and bruising.
Two men, both aged 40, from Bebington and Upton were arrested on suspicion of affray and assault a short time later.
A statement from Merseyside Police said: “The investigation is in its early stages and at this time it is believed that the victim, a 25-year-old man from Birkenhead, was driving his car along Houghton Road when he came into contact with another vehicle containing six or seven men.
“It is understood there was an altercation between the victim and the group of men and the victim was assaulted.”
One of the men was allegedly carrying a machete.
Detective Sergeant Simon Douch said: “The investigation is very much in its early stages and we are still trying to piece together exactly what has happened.
"The victim has been taken to hospital where he is being treated for his injuries and this was a nasty attack.
"The incident has caused disruption within the local community with reports of the alleged offenders running through people’s gardens following the attack.
“I would urge anyone who has any information which could help us find those responsible to come forward as soon as possible.
"The alleged behaviour of this group is absolutely abhorrent and those responsible need to be caught - we will not let groups like this cause fear in our communities.”
Anyone with information should contact Wirral CID on 0151 777 2265 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
