ROVERS' boss Ronnie Moore feels he’s heading into the first game of the new season on Saturday with a stronger squad than he had 12 months ago.

Tranmere start the campaign with an away at Walsall before returning to Prenton Park for a Capital One Cup first round tie against Mansfield Town and then League One fixture against Crawley.

Moore said "I can’t wait for Saturday - it's just a pity we’ve got to wait a week to get a game.

"The players are all raring to go and I’m looking forward to it. I believe Walsall are going to be a really good footballing team and it will be interesting to see how we do against them.

"I believe we’ll score plenty of goals this season.

"You look at what we’ve got; as an attacking force, I think we’ll be as good as anybody.

"We're not the biggest side and we’re not the most physical, but we’ll certainly have a go.

"We've got a good blend, there's a bit of youth and a bit of experience and hopefully that will see us through the season. I think we’ve improved the side, I think we’re a stronger squad than we were last year."

But Moore would still like to add to his numbers and could take advantage of the loan market to do so.

He added: "We’ve only got two full backs, a left back and a right back. But at the present time it's all kids who are available so we might have to wait to use the loans if one of them gets injured.

"We're young in midfield. There are only three who are fit at the moment and they’re all babies really. Sometimes you might want an older head in there.

"You might want three in there sometimes. If Jason Koumas becomes a part of the squad then you might look at the way you play and put three in there and he’d be more experienced than anybody to sit on the ball and make other people play."

Rovers lost their final pre-season friendly 0-2, against Conference side Wrexham at the Racecourse last Saturday, in a game marred by crowd trouble Ronnie reflected: "I was disappointed that we lost against Wrexham on Saturday, but pre-season is all about fitness. The real work starts on Saturday."
