AGE UK Wirral is urging the borough's more elderly motorists to update their driving licences after DVLA figures showed across the country 2m are out of date.

The vehicle authority says there are also 2.6m driving licence photos due to expire this year.

People with an expired licence could be facing a penalty of up to £1,000.

Mark Cheeseman, trading manager at Age UK Wirral, said: "Driving is a great way to maintain independence and freedom.

"With a £1,000 fine at risk we’re encouraging local older motorists to check their driving licences haven’t expired.

“This is particularly important for drivers who are 70-plus as their licences need to be renewed every three years - helpfully for motorists of this age renewals are free.”

Age UK’s ‘In the driving seat’ free guide includes information about renewing your licence, declaring health conditions and tips on continuing to drive safely.
