Fire chiefs are warning about the dangers of leaving cooking unattended after two incidents in Wallasey last night.

Two crews from Wallasey fire station were called to an address in Love Lane, Poulton at around 7pm.

It is thought clothing had been on a cooker and a hob had been turned on by accident.

There was smoke damage to the kitchen, ground- and first-floor.

Then, at around 9pm firefighters were called to a house in Rake Lane, Liscard.

Wearing breathing apparatus they extinguished the blaze and conducted a search to make sure no-one was inside. They also carried out safety checks at all flats in the building.

Watch manager John Kellaway from Wallasey fire station, said: "We advise that cooking is never left unattended, even for a moment.

"Fires involving cooking can spread quickly and produce large volumes of smoke.

"Smoke alarms alerted neighbours in this case and we urge people to have working smoke alarms on each level of their homes.

"They give you the vital early warning to a fire allowing you to react and escape. Remember, if you discover a fire – get out, stay out and call 999."
