TRANMERE Rovers were beaten 2-1 by Burnley in pre-season action at Prenton Park last night.

The Clarets found the net through Danny Ings and Dean Marney with Rovers pulling a late goal back when substitute James Rowe netted from eight yards.

The first shot of the game came from striker Ryan Lowe but his 25 yard effort went a couple of yards wide of the left hand post.

On six minutes midfielder Andy Robinson's long range attempt was parried by Tom Heaton and the Burnley keeper was quickly back on his feet to tip over Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro's left foot follow up.

Burnley's first attempt on goal came in the 25th minute when a back post shot from Charlie Austin that was saved by Rovers' goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams.

Robinson jinked his way past a defender on 35 minutes and into the area only to see his right foot shot curl against the bottom of the right hand post and back into play.

Seconds later the midfielder was sent through on goal by Akpa Akpro but he went down under a challenge and the referee ignored the penalty appeals.

On 38 minutes the visitors took the lead. A cross from Kieran Trippier found Danny Ings 15 yards out and the striker fired past Fon Williams into the top of the net.

Joe Thompson replaced Abdulai Baggie for the second half and the winger was involved in the move that saw a Robinson header deflect past the post on 49 minutes. From the resulting corner Max Power's shot looped up off a defender and Heaton had to backpeddle quickly to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Defender Ian Goodison came on for Stephen Foster after the centre back took an elbow in the face but soon after the visitors doubled the lead when Dean Marney fired an unstoppable shot into the top left corner from 30 yards.

Further changes saw James Rowe and Cole Stockton replace Chris Atkinson and Akpa Akpro for Tranmere while Burnley made a host of changes as the half went on.

It was Rowe who pulled a goal back for Tranmere late on, the midfielder converting from close range from Evan Horwood's cross.
