WIRRAL'S Race For Life in aid of Cancer Research UK takes place in Birkenhead Park later this morning.

A river of pink will flow through the historic venue during the Globe-backed event, which starts at 11am.

Last year, 3911 women took part, raising £173,895. The entry deadline was midnight on Thursday and organizers say 3,594 have signed up for today's fundraiser.

The Wirral Globe has been the event’s official newspaper since 2006 and our team will be covering today's event.

Laura Taylor, the charity's North West events manager, said: "I want to say a big thank you to everyone who is taking part today. Your support means so much.

"It's been absolutely fantastic to have so many people register and I hope they have a great time helping raise money for a very important cause."

Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking research but with help from the people of Wirral, the charity intends to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Among those putting on their running shoes today is Upton-based nurse Mary Evans who survived breast cancer and is stepping up her fight against the disease.

Also taking part are sisters Tracy Colley, Helen Ward and Rachel Williams in memory of dad John Cooke, who lost a battle with lung cancer.

And a 39-strong team of staff, parents, friends and family from Hayfield School in Upton will take part, hoping to raise as much money as possible in support of headteacher Sheena Drake who is battling breast cancer.
