POLICE investigating a fatal crash in Wirral yesterday are hoping to speak to a passerby who tried to rescue the victim.

The 50-year-old driver of a Ford Ka was pronounced dead at the scene in Lever causeway, Bebington at around 10.40am after his vehicle crashed into a tree.

Officers are now investigating how tragedy happened and are keen to trace a man in his 20s who tried to free the driver.

Sergeant Paul Hulme from Merseyside Police’s collision investigation unit, said: "This was an absolute tragedy for this man and his family, who are distraught.

"We are trying to piece together the events leading up to the collision and we need to speak to everyone who saw this Ford Ka in the moments before and the aftermath.

Several members of the public bravely tried to help him and I would like to thank them for their efforts.

"We are still trying to trace one of them - a man aged in his 20s who was wearing glasses and a grey t-shirt - as he may have information that could help us establish what happened yesterday."

Officers have notified the man's next of kin but he is yet to be formally identified.
