A MAN was given oxygen following a fire at his Wirral home earlier this morning that is thought to have been caused by an unattended cigarette.
Firefighters were called to an address in Oxton Road, Birkenhead, at 1am.
Officers gave oxygen to a man before the arrival of paramedics and also ventilated the property to clear it of smoke.
He was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital for a precautionary check-up.
The lounge and kitchen of the property were damaged by smoke.
Watch manager Kev Hollis, from Blue Watch at Birkenhead fire station, said: "This was suspected to be caused by a cigarette left unattended.
"We advise cigarettes are completely extinguished before they are left in any ashtrays or put into bins.
"We always advise that on discovering a fire people get out, stay outside and call 999 and await our arrival. People should never re-enter buildings where there is a fire."
