PUPILS from St Joseph's Primary School in Upton took part in a special sports day designed to help children improve their long-term health.

The event, at Upton Hall School, was part of the ASDA Active programme staged by Sports Leaders UK to 'Get Britain Moving'.

It aims to help the next generation improve their long-term health while unlocking their potential and providing sporting opportunities in local communities.

Staff from ASDA’s Arrowe Park store were on hand to provide free healthy refreshments throughout the event.

Linda Plowright, CEO of Sports Leaders UK said: "Improving the nation's long-term health through sport has rightly been in the political spotlight recently, with the Government releasing £150m of funding to improve sport in primary schools.

"Adopting the right habits and attitudes early on in life is key and what Sports Leaders UK are doing goes to the heart of this initiative, helping to improve health and wellbeing among the young...and making it fun too."

Dave Savidge, National Business Development Manager at Sports Leaders UK, said: "The ASDA Active events which are powered by Sports Leaders UK are a fantastic opportunity for Sports Leaders to showcase their leadership skills and give something back to the community which is fun and purposeful.

"With more Sports Leaders getting involved in local ASDA Active events, we have more young people being active across the country – which can only be a positive thing."

Sports Leaders UK trains and supports more than 100,000 volunteers a year in programmes such as this.

Chief executive Linda Plowright said: "A Sports Leaders UK qualification adds a practical qualification to exam passes and these events showcase a youngster’s skills in leadership, organisation and communication; it gives them a vital edge in employability.”
