THE prospect of a Merseyside mayor has been ruled out by Wirral's Council leader as it moves to become part of a combined authority.

The Globe revealed last week that the authority was set to join forces with other Merseyside councils as part of plans to bid for more Government cash.

Wirral's ruling Labour cabinet this week voted unanimously in support of plans to move towards a new "super council” dealing with economic growth and transport.

The proposal is now subject to further detailed discussion between constituent authorities.

The aim is to allow Merseyside to compete with neighbouring areas such as Greater Manchester and be considered for a Government grant called the single local growth fund.

Wirral Council leader Cllr Phil Davies said the region needs to make a the step in order to make the right investments for Wirral.

Addressing cabinet, he added: "There’s an agreement in principle to look at a combined authority as a way forward and there is a lot more detail to be worked on this.

"This is not Merseyside county council by another name. It will not detract from the council's abilities to independently carry out their core duties."

On the prospect of a Mayor of Merseyside, he said: "Wirral and Merseyside are going to get a reasonable slice of funds that will be made available.

"From this administration, I want to make it clear that a city region mayor is not appropriate."

Chief Executive Graham Burgess said: "This is about devolving powers down from Government, not taking powers away from local authorities.

"I'm confident that Wirral will get its fair share of the power from this and we can get great advantages."

During Thursday's meeting, cabinet also approved plans for the authority to share back office back office services such as IT, legal services and human resources with Cheshire West and Chester Council.

Negotiations will take place to discuss the extent of the partnership.

Wirral's deputy leader and cabinet member Ann McLachlan said the leaders of both council's were due to sign an agreement to start work on the project next week.
