A WIRRAL-born violinist takes to the stage at Wallasey Town Hall for a special performance this weekend.

Helen Charlesworth, from Heswall, will perform Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with the Wirral Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, July 13.

The former student of Upton Hall school, first took up the violin at the age of three, and progressed through the National Children's Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain before studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. She graduated last year.

She now works as a freelance violinist, playing for the Halle and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras amongst others.

Helen has previously performed concertos by Mozart and Tchaikovsky with the orchestra.

Rod Tann, chairman of Wirral Symphony Orchestra, said: "Wirral Symphony Orchestra has always tried to promote young local talent, and it's been tremendous to be part of Helen's musical development over the years. We're all looking forward to a wonderful concert".

The orchestra will also play the overture to Weber's "Der Freischutz" and Mahler's epic Symphony No 1, and the concert, which will benefit the Mayor's Charity Fund, will be in the presence of Mayor, Cllr Dave Mitchell.

Saturday’s concert starts at 7.30pm, further details are from www.wirralsymphony.co.uk or 625 1234.
