TRANMERE Rovers begin their push for League One promotion this weekend.

Prenton Park boss Ronnie Moore is in confident mood about the new season, which opens with an away fixture against Swindon Town at the County Ground on Saturday afternoon and ends on May 2.

Rovers’ last campaign ended with the club amassing 65 points and finishing 11th place on the table and Moore hopes to take his squad further this time.

He told Globe Sport: “I’m looking forward to the new season and I think the league will be as wide open as it was last year.

“There are going to be some tough sides out there, but I’m not afraid to take my team anywhere.

“It’s everybody’s aim to get promoted and that’s what we’re going to try and do.

“We’re playing a new system, but that doesn’t mean we’re just going to play 4-3-3 all the time, I’ll adapt this to suit the players we have.”

The seventh new signing of the summer was 19-year-old midfielder Charlie Barnett, who has come through the Liverpool Football Club Academy and was a member of their FA Youth Cup winning side in 2006. He had been on trial at Tranmere since the beginning of pre-season and his performances in midfield have impressed coaching staff and supporters. His arrival follows that of new signings Gareth Edds, Edrissa Sonko, George O’Callaghan, Bas Savage, Luke Waterfall and Godwin Antwi.

Moore said: “This is a brilliant signing for the club and it’s one I’m very excited about. Charlie has done really well in pre-season with us.

“He has all the Liverpool traditions – he’s got great touch, vision and technique. He’ll bring a touch of artistry to the side and I’m sure he’ll go a long way in the game, hopefully with Tranmere.“It’s nice to see the growing links between Tranmere and Liverpool. The friendly against them was a great day for football on Merseyside and we’ve since signed two of their players.

“It’s a good opportunity for any Wirral based Liverpool supporters to come to Prenton Park and watch some of their talented youngsters in action for Tranmere.”

Charlie added: “I’m really happy to have signed. I just want to get started now and play some games.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here so far, the lads have been great with me and the coaching staff have helped me settle in.”

As the Globe went to press on Tuesday, the Tranmere Super-LamBanana was delivered to Prenton Park. It is part of Go SuperLamBananas, a public art spectacular forming part of the celebrations for Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture.

More than 100, two-metre tall replicas of Taro Chiezo’s iconic SuperLamBanana sculpture were painted, decorated and adorned by local artists, schools and community groups, to create a free to view, open air, exhibition throughout Merseyside and beyond.Sally-Ann Wilkinson, director of Wild in Art said: “The trail simply wouldn't have been complete without a SuperLamBanana at Prenton Park “Football is part of the lifeblood of Merseyside and Wirral. The SuperLamBananas have an incredible ability of embodying the spirit of the region and its people, and nothing stirs their passion more than football.

“The Tranmere SuperLamBanana is the perfect signing to play up-front for Wirral's superb SuperLamBananas. We are delighted to welcome it to our team.”

Tranmere’s SuperLamBanana is located in front of the ticket office portacabin in the car park at Prenton Park.
