TRANMERE Rovers have signed their sixth new player, Liverpool Football Club defender Godwin Antwi on loan until January.

The 20-year-old has been with Liverpool since 2005 when he joined from Spanish side Real Zaragoza after being spotted by Rafa Benitez’s then head scout, Paco Herrera.

Born in Kumasi, Ghana, and holder of a Spanish passport, Antwi was part of Liverpool’s FA Youth Cup winning side in 2006.

He has made more than 40 first team appearances during loan spells away from Liverpool, which included time with Hartlepool.

Godwin is Ronnie Moore’s sixth signing of the summer following the arrival of Gareth Edds, Edrissa Sonko, George O’Callaghan, Bas Savage and Luke Waterfall at Prenton Park. He was available for Tranmere’s pre-season friendlies against Bolton at Prenton Park on Tuesday night and will be in the line-up for Saturday’s game against visitors Blackpool with a 3pm kick-off.

Manager Moore, whose squad beat Morecambe 2-1 at Christie Park on Saturday, said: “Godwin is a very talented young defender who we’ve been watching for some time.

“When I heard he had become available on loan I jumped at the chance of bringing him in to play right back.

“He has spent the last three seasons at Liverpool so has worked with some great coaches. He is comfortable on the ball, already has Football League experience from his time at Hartlepool and he will add quality, strength and pace to our defence.

“Hopefully we will be able to keep him beyond January.

“I’d like to thank Rafa Benitez and Liverpool Football Club for allowing him to come here.

“It is great that the two clubs are able to work together to help the career of a young player.”

Godwin added: “I’m very happy to be here. Tranmere is a good club and it will be a great experience for me.

“I’m looking forward to meeting my new team mates and some hard training ahead of the season.”

Rovers lost the final game of the last season 2-1 at Northampton and finished ninth on the Coca Cola campaign, with 67 points. Their new promotion campaign opens with an away game against Swindon Town at the County Ground on Saturday, August 9.
