IN the Final of this year’s Rose Bowl Tournament Higher Tranmere managed to overcome a handicap of 48 to beat Lever Club by 13 shots at Upton on Saturday.

Spearheaded by a brilliant 21-08 win for Dave Gilmore they won the first seven games to take a 10 shot lead.

Though Levers fought back with two wins of their own to make the tie all square a great winning fight back by Chris Halsey, at one point 14-04 down, regained the lead and wins by Matt Gilmore and Rob Hall saw Higher Tranmere home.

On the same day Sacred Heart produced a fine team performance to defeat Manor Road in the Wallasey News Cup Final by 14 shots on Gladstone’s green.

Sacred Heart were given a 36 shot start and, by winning 6 of the 12 games, they managed to retain a lead throughout the match. Steve Smith, with a tremendous 21-07 win, gave them a great start and though Jimmy Bunting later matched this score for Manor Road it was never quite enough and the Association Chairman, Keith Etches, was able to present the Cup to Sacred Heart’s honorary captain Kyle Gorman. Peter Fishwick was praised for his excellent refereeing.

Though late, it was good to hear of 10 year old Kevin Excell who plays for ESWA Arriva, winning the Wyre Bowling Festival Junior under 12 Tournament in Fleetwood last month.

Playing in front of a crowd of over 500 spectators Kevin beat Ben Blackburn from Bolton 11-10 in the Final. Well done Kevin.

The Wallasey Individual Merit Tournament will be held on Sunday August 31 with an 11am start.

The Wallasey Festival and the Wallsey Junior Merit will both be on the following Sunday September 7, again with an 11am start.

It is still possible to enter these Tournaments and anybody wishing to do so should contact Keith Etches on 0775 9956998.

There is also a reminder that the Richard Evans Memorial Junior Tournament will be on September 6, at Cammell Laird, starting at 11am.

Mo and John Evans who run the weekly coaching sessions for junior players at Cammell Lairds have asked if there are any bowlers who have spare bowls or jacks which could be donated to the Juniors. Anyone who would like to do so should ring Mo or John on 643 8779.
