BIRKENHEAD St Mary’s produced a fighting display on Sunday to lift the David Kaufman Memorial Trophy for the first time.

They saw off Bromborough Paints Merseyside and Southport Alliance rivals Alder by five wickets at Ashville Road in a game reduced to forty overs per side.

Alder posted 191-3 with Dean Newhouse claiming all three wickets for 58 runs. The Saints got home with an over to spare thanks in the main to a terrific third wicket partnership of 146 by Steve McGenity 70 not out and Shakeel Nawaz 82.

The previous day Birkenhead lost by 136 runs at home to Burscough in the Alliance. Nawaz reached 46.

Caldy enjoyed a nine wickets margin at Southport Trinity Anthony Sams led the way with an unbeaten 68.

Parkfield Liscard fell by two wickets against visiting Norley Hall. The Tranmere Vics match at Prescot & Odyssey was abandoned after they had been shot out for 58.

In the Merseyside Competition Port Sunlight chalked up a nine wickets success at the expense of Goodlass.

Maritime fell by three wickets at home to Cheshire Lines and Bromborough went down by six wickets at St Mary’s College Old Boys.

Shaftesbury were halted by rain in their chase after the Mossley Hill score of 209-6. They had reached 81-1 when the elements took over.

Parkonians in Meller Braggins Cheshire League Three went under by seven wickets at home to Lindow but Dave Fletcher with 3-40 reached fifty wickets for the season.

Wirral were also losers by eighteen runs against visiting Wistaston Village.

Neston lost by five wickets at home to leaders Alderley Edge in the Right Move Abroad Cheshire County League. Stan Clifford did his best with a knock of 59.

The Division One derby between Oxton and Upton was drawn as the rain intervened.

It was a similar story for Birkenhead Park in their match at Poynton where Zak ur Rehman posted 63.

Neil Woods made 68 for Irby who also had to settle for a stalemate in a rain-affected clash.

In Division one West Kirby Victoria have already ensured that they have won the league for a record eighth time. Sandridge will win the second division but the 2nd promotion spot is still not decided, it will be either Great Meols or Harrison Park ‘B’.
