EMERGENCY services were called to the M53 motorway after a car went up in flames.

At around 11am today (Monday, September 2) Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service attended an incident on the M53 southbound, between junction 3 Woodchurch and the exit slip road for junction 4 Clatterbridge.

When crews arrived they found a car on fire.

Firefighters workers to extinguish the fire while Merseyside Police closed the exit slip road and supported traffic management.

North West Ambulance Service Paramedics were also in attendance.

Two people who were inside the car had managed to escape before the fire service attended and were uninjured.

Crews made the vehicle safe for recovery and left the incident with National Highways.

The slip road remained closed and crews left the scene just before midday.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: “Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended an incident on the M53 southbound, between junction 3 Woodchurch and the exit slip road for junction 4 Clatterbridge on the morning of Monday 2nd September.

“Crews were alerted at 10.53 and on scene at 11.05, with two fire engines attending.

“On arrival, this was one vehicle well alight. One firefighter in breathing apparatus under general observation used a high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire.

“Merseyside Police were on scene to close the exit slip road and support traffic management. North West Ambulance Service Paramedics were also in attendance.

“Two occupants of the vehicle were out prior to fire service attendance and uninjured.

“Crews made the vehicle safe for recovery and left the incident with National Highways.

“The slip road remained closed and crews left the scene at 11.59.”
