A MONTHLY pizza pop-up in a Wirral seaside resort has been given the go-ahead.

On Friday April 26, SUP, a coffee shop, bar, and gift shop, in New Brighton will host its first regular Neapolitan pizza pop up event at 6 Atherton Street opposite New Brighton train station. It will run between 5.30pm and 9pm on the last Friday of each month.

The event will be dog-friendly, offering a range of different pizzas people will be able to order out in the garden at the back of the shop, supplied by the Dough Bros, run by friends and pizza chefs, Jack Cooke and Matthew McAndrew. Vegan and gluten free options will also be available with notice.

The event started as a celebration of the shop’s birthday which first opened in September 2020. Since then, it has continued hosting a number of different clubs including book, running, and now walking groups as well as wine tasting evenings and other events.

Lucy Barrett and Scott Duffey who run SUP, which stands for Shop Unwind Print, said the event had seen queues out of the door in the past, adding: “We did it on our second and our third birthday. It was really busy and we thought to keep doing them. Something to look forward to at what for most will mark the end of a busy working month.”

They said: “We have lived here for years and at first we barely knew anyone but by opening SUP, it’s been so nice to meet and come to know so many people in the area. That has been the biggest reward from it all.”

Out the back of the shop is a garden with tables and chairs as well as a screen printing studio, where they make their print under the name Toucan Tango. Continuing to run that for the last eight years, the couple said they had always wanted to start up a coffee, bottle and gift shop, they could sell their prints through, this became SUP.

After opening they said “What’s also been amazing to see, as we take on staff, is the other creative folks that have gravitated towards the shop.”

Luce said: “It’s been fun. At times stressful but it’s been a real labour of love.”

The regular pizza event was recently given the go-ahead by Wirral Council after the shop applied to see whether they needed further planning permission to run it. The local authority previously granted the premises a licence to serve alcohol and host events until 10pm.
