The M53 at Morerton Spur was closed at around 8.30pm last night after a woman jumped from a bridge onto the carriageway.
The 29-year-old was taken by ambulance to hospital where her condition is described as critical.
The motorway was closed in both directions between junctions one and two while examinations were carried out at the scene.
A full investigation is underway.
