MORE than 200 smokers across Wirral have signed up to a new service which aims to help them kick the habit.

ABL Wirral was launched on April 1 with a mission to reduce the number of people dependent on nicotine and tobacco.

The service is run by community healthcare organisation ABL Health on behalf of Wirral Council.

Elizabeth Woodworth, nicotine and smoking cessation lead at ABL Wirral, said: "There are so many benefits to giving up smoking – you’ll live a longer, better quality of life, create a safer, cleaner future for your family and save money too.

"If you're a smoker who wants to stop, get in touch as you're four times more likely to quit for good with our support."

ABL Wirral’s team of experts offer free, tailored four and 12 week programmes including both one-to-one and group support at easily accessible venues.

There is also an offer of help for people who wish to quit using an e-cigarette.

Cllr Janette Williamson, Wirral's cabinet member for public Health, visited a drop-in session at Moreton Health Clinic on World No Tobacco Day.

She said: "It is vital that we support people in leading healthier lives as this is one of the priorities in the Wirral Plan.

"I would encourage residents to access this service to make a positive difference to their lives and help build a smoke free future for the next generation."

Cllr Williamson met Pat Fletcher, from Birkenhead, who has stopped smoking after 18 years with the help of the service. Pat said: "I'm really proud of what I've achieved so far and think this is a good way for people who want to quit to get the support they need."
